Spring is around the corner so that means it’s time to prune the vines! We are very happy to have @thesugarwash (our assistant winemaker) helping us out in the vineyard on weekends.

Last year it was hard to prune our leased vineyard because we didn’t have any history with it and we had to hit the ground running once we took over the lease on April 1st. Now that we have gotten to know the vineyard, we have a much better strategy for regenerating vigor and growth. We were very pleased with the quality of the fruit from our first year in this vineyard and look forward to making it even better this year!

Pruning of our home vineyard will be done last to ensure there’s no longer any frost risk which could still harm our more sensitive young vines.

Who’s ready to taste some Chain Reaction wine???

We finally got our tasting room renovation permit approved! It has taken a lot to get to this point - lots of communication with the city since last fall. Our former Airbnb suite will become our new tasting room - at least for the short term. Renovations will be modest but include required wheelchair accessibility, enhanced fire protection and new French doors.

Many of you have been asking when our wines will be ready for sale. I wish we had a better answer than we're targeting this spring (2021). But in order to sell our wines, we need a manufacturer's license. And in order to get that license, we need a production facility approved by various levels of government. Simple, right?

For the next year, and possibly two years, we plan to make wine at the back of our property in a temporary 'quonset hut' winery that will eventually become a storage shed. The trick will be to construct this building and run the necessary utilities to it without breaking the bank because we would rather invest in our permanent winery. This will be a really modest 600 square foot steel building on a concrete slab which will serve us well as an interim facility. Once we're past the risk of frost in the next month or so, we will be working with our contractor to break ground and get this going!

What a difference 24 hrs makes! Yesterday we were doing some trellis maintenance in the sunshine sans jackets. Penticton was the warmest place in Canada and set a new record of 13.6 degrees!

Today was - well let’s just say we weren’t outside working on the trellis today.

Joel did his first swim 🏊‍♂️ in 9 months on Friday and today we got back into our winter routine of spinning! 🚴 We miss the old days of spinning at “Le Garage” (especially the pot luck breakfast afterwards!), but it was still nice to see some familiar and new faces from @stevestonathleticassociation on this morning’s awesome Zoom training session by @bee3fitness.

Time will tell if he is able to keep up training for the race while juggling the demands of two vineyards and opening our winery, but we will have our fingers crossed. 🤞

In the meantime, we definitely earned our wine tonight!!!

We recently got to taste our 2020 Pinot Gris, rose and Pinot Noir at @morainewinery and we are loving how they are tasting!🍷

The rose in particular is quite nice. It is 100% Pinot Noir and done in a drier, more elegant style. Since Joel believes wine relates to songs, after much deliberation, winemaker @baanzen and @thesugarwash settled on Marcy Playground’s Sex and Candy 🎵 as her theme song 😝 With notes of double cherry pie and disco lemonade!! 🍭 🍬 #noemojiforsex

On the other hand, our Pinot Noir’s song is an acoustic version of Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven 🎵 🎸 Why acoustic? Well the Pinot Noir is shaping up to be little more elegant than last year’s, so it isn’t full on rock nor is it a ballad.

And the song for the Pinot Gris? Nada! Sadly it didn’t get one - Pinot Gris is always the forgotten child! 🔕

A year and a half after we planted the vineyard, we finally have row number tags up on the end posts!

We used different colors to mark irrigation zones and/or grape variety. And who knew that the tags came in Linda’s favorite color?!? 🍇. Those ones have been placed in the block alongside the driveway/in front of our house so that everyone can enjoy the purply goodness!

We haven’t forgotten about the tags for the people who helped us plant. It’s still on the list of things to do!
